Addiction can be detected among people by one or a combination of these: preoccupation, increased tolerance towards gambling, withdrawal, escape from the world outside, chasing losses, compulsive lying, loss of control, illegal acts, risking most significant relationships, and finally bailout. Gamblers turn toward it due to some or the other problem.

These are classified as action problem gamblers, escape problem gambler, internet problem gambler, and the stock market problem gambler. Like any other addiction this too has its own repercussions, be it social or economic and the addicted people need a lot of support.

There are again many ways of going about the problem, from talking to parents, counsellors or friends, to joining a support group. Another method is the Gamblers Anonymous which employs a 12 step recovery program aimed at helping these gamblers.
